The number of visitors at CEU during the European Heritage Days held on September 15 and 16 more than doubled compared to last year, with our youngest and most active audience so far.
CEU joined the Cultural Heritage Days for the sixth time in 2018 to showcase its built heritage to the broader community as well as the CEU community. CEU originally advertised eight guided tours in English and in Hungarian, three concerts, an exhibition, and an urban game, but due to the high turnout twice as many guided tours had to be started.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and CEU colleague Marianne Saghy, founding faculty member of the Department of Medieval Studies, on September 21. Marianne taught and wrote in her chosen field of late antique and medieval cult of saints and religious culture, with a passion that easily drew the interest of her students and colleagues. She will be sorely missed.

The Department of Medieval Studies at CEU celebrated its 25th anniversary by inviting the public to "Visit the Middle Ages." With a knight in full armor, nomadic warriors demonstrating their skills with sabre and lance, noblewomen and peasants showing crafts from painting to papermaking, ceramics to glass, medicine to clothing, CEU's Nador 13 Atrium building was transformed into a medieval fair.

The Cultural Heritage Studies Program at CEU has been awarded in recognition of the high standard of the activities offered at the European Heritage Days (EHD). The award, symbolized by a puppet, was awarded by the community of EHD organizers at a two-day meeting of local event organizers in Budapest in November.

Associate Professor Katalin Szende, head of the Department of Medieval Studies at CEU, gave a lecture at the University of Vienna November 2 as part of a series on Hungarian history organized jointly by Collegium Hungaricum Wien, the Institut für Osteuropäische Geschichte and the Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung at the University of Vienna.

The book "Pagans and Christians in the Late Roman Empire: New Evidence, New Approaches," edited by Marianne Saghy, associate professor at the Department of Medieval Studies at CEU and Edward Schoolman of the University of Nevada, Reno, was launched at an event at the University of Pecs November 20. The book was published by CEU Press as part of the Medievalia series.

The famed knight of the Round Table, Sir Lancelot du Lac, may very well have been based on Hungary's King Laszlo, also known as Ladislaus I, according to Stephen Pow, doctoral student in the Department of Medieval Studies at CEU, who presented his argument at an event at the Hungarian Institute of Paris co-hosted by the International Medieval Society of Paris.

Historians studying the medieval and early modern period take different approaches to reconstruct personhood and its models, according to Gadi Algazi, professor and head of the Department of History at Tel Aviv University, and associate research fellow at Humboldt University, Berlin. Algazi spoke at CEU November 6-9 as part of the Natalie Zemon Davis Annual Lecture Series, hosted by the Department of Medieval Studies and the Department of History.
