CEU alumnus Ezra Chiloba Simiyu (DPP ’08) was named Commission Secretary and CEO of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on January 12.
A specialist in electoral governance and political management, Chiloba is former deputy team leader at Drivers for Accountability, a senior fellow at the Policy House and a member of the Law Society of Kenya. He replaces James Oswago and his deputy Wilson Shollei, who were suspended for impropriety in Kenya’s March 2013 elections.

Stefan Roch, Phd student in the Department of Public Policy, spent four weeks in Beirut, Lebanon this May. In his free time, he wandered around the city searching interesting situations, people and places that he found “were meaningful and would capture a certain aspect of Beirut and living and working in it.” His photos are on display in CEU’s Exhibition Hall in Nador 9.

The study of public policy at CEU is rooted in the university’s mission to promote open societies as well as a conviction that a combination of different social science methods is required to address the complex challenges of reform and good governance. The decision to offer programs in public policy a decade ago also involved the practical recognition that on the global, national, and local levels of policymaking, there was – and is – an increasing demand for analysts from developing and transition countries.

Mundus MAPP student Mihai Popsoi took part in an international debate project called "Visegrad4Moldova! - Debating the European Union: Visegrad 4 Experience." Popsoi’s essay, “Moldova Cannot Own its Future Unless it Breaks with its Past” won the essay competition of the project.

The rapid development of shale gas in the U.S. is prompting other countries to develop their own shale gas resources. From June 2–3, CEU professors Andreas Goldthau and Michael LaBelle presented their research on Bulgaria’s ban on shale gas at the World Bank Institute in Washington D.C. The invited audience assembled for the World Bank Institute Learning Symposium on Governance of Unconventional Gas: Exploring How to Deliver Transparent Benefits in Non-OECD Countries.

Martin Kahanec, associate professor in CEU’s Department of Public Policy, published an article on "Roma integration in European labor markets" in IZA (Institute for the Study of Labor) World of Labor, saying that labor market integration of the Roma is a moral and economic imperative. The pathology of social and economic separation and mistrust affects both Roma and non-Roma populations. Thus, policy intervention must target whole communities, and its scale and scope must be commensurate with the challenge.

Associate Professor Martin Kahanec of the Department of Public Policy and labor economists from 10 EU countries signed "Working Without Borders: A Manifesto for Europe's Future" as a counterpoint to the prevailing pessimism about Europe and the growing opposition against free labor mobility within Europe, calling for a future-oriented agenda for a genuine European labor market without borders.
