Brokerchooser, a CEU Innovations Lab startup, was selected among 35 fintech (financial technology) companies to participate at the Fintech Circle Institute kickoff in London. Brokerchooser co-founder and CEO Tibor Bedo presented the short video course he developed on enhancing customer focus.

Balazs Romhanyi, visiting professor in the Department of Economics and Business at CEU, has been awarded the Kaldor Prize by the jury of the Department of Economic Policy and Macroeconomics of the Corvinus University of Budapest. The prize, named after Lord Nicholas Kaldor, an economics professor of Hungarian origin at Cambridge University, is given every year to an economist who contributes to solving economic problems.

CEU now ranks in the 101-150 spot worldwide in political science and in the 151-200 spot in economics, according to Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017. This year, institutions are ranked in 52 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. To be included in a subject ranking, universities need to have a minimum number of research publications during the period of 2011-2015. The publication threshold is different for different subjects.

Tijana Krstic, associate professor in the Departments of Medieval Studies and History, and Gabor Kezdi, professor in the Department of Economics, have been named the recipients of the 2017 CEU Distinguished Teaching Award. The award recognizes CEU faculty members for promoting high standards of teaching, linked with the mission and institutional ambitions of CEU.

Mariana Kotzeva (ECON ’93) was appointed Acting Director-General of Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union located in Luxembourg, effective January 1, 2017.
Kotzeva, who was visiting professor in the Department of Economics at CEU from 1998 to 2002, joined Eurostat as a special adviser in April 2012 and was appointed Deputy Director-General in July 2014.

Albert-Laszlo Barabasi, visiting professor at CEU’s Center for Network Science and the Department of Economics, was awarded the Gabor Denes Prize, an honor presented each year to Hungarian scientists who have demonstrated extraordinary innovation. The prize is named for physicist, electrical engineer, and humanist Dennis Gabor (1900-1979, known as Gabor Denes in Hungarian), who won the 1971 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing the hologram. The award was presented to Barabasi and 12 other scientists on Dec. 22 at the Hungarian Parliament.

Some 500 scholars from around the globe came to Budapest to search together for frameworks in economic thinking that help us understand the big picture, at the first-ever plenary of the Young Scholars Initiative (YSI), held at CEU October 19-22. YSI was created under the rubric of the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET), which was founded by George Soros and colleagues in 2009.

Alessandro De Chiara, assistant professor in the Department of Economics, was awarded the Goran Skogh Award for young scholars for the most promising paper presented at the 33rd Annual Conference of the European Association of Law and Economics (EALE) in Bologna. The award, given in the memory of Goran Skogh, first President of EALE, aims to encourage outstanding young scholars of law and economics to remain in academia.

Andrzej Baniak, associate professor in the Department of Economics, was awarded the prestigious title of “egyetemi tanar." The appointment, made by Janos Ader, the President of Hungary, is effective September 1, 2016.

Botond Koszegi of CEU’s Department of Economics has been appointed “egyetemi tanar” as of February 1, 2016. The title, which literally means “university professor,” indicates a high ranking within Hungarian higher education. To qualify for accreditation in Hungary, doctoral schools must have a certain number of such professors. For this reason, the promotion of a CEU faculty member to this rank is an important step in increasing CEU’s integration into the Hungarian higher education system
