Climate of doubt: A re-evaluation of Büntgen and Di Cosmo’s environmental hypothesis for the Mongol withdrawal from Hungary, 1242 CE, an article co-written by scholars from various Hungarian institutions, CEU faculty and doctoral students, has been published in Scientific Reports in response to a scholarly hypothesis developed by two leading scholars from Switzerland and Princeton University.

Gabor Klaniczay, University Professor at the Department of Medieval Studies, received the International Prize for History at the General Assembly of the International Committee of Historical Sciences (CISH) on September 29 in Moscow. Klaniczay was awarded the prize for the excellence of his work last year.

Marianne Saghy, associate professor in the Department of Medieval Studies and the Doctoral School of History at CEU, will teach a course from October 2017, entitled Desert Fathers, Prophets, and Bishops at Attila Jozsef Open University. The course, offered for the first time at the Open University, will focus on the relationship between holiness and power, asceticism, and community building through the scriptures.

Even though the study of the Middle Ages seems to have little in common with environmental policies, the interdisciplinary nature of the Medieval Studies Department enables alumni to get involved in the study of long-term ecological processes and thus contribute to understanding of present climatic fluctuations.

CEU alumnus Peter Szabo (MEDS MA’98, PhD‘03) has been elected president of the European Association of Environmental History, an association which promotes dialogue between humanistic scholarship, environmental science and other disciplines. After graduating from CEU, Szabo has worked as a historical ecologist and environmental historian in the Institute of Botany at the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Emilia Jamroziak (MA'97) has been elected as director of the Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of Leeds. She graduated from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan and Central European University in Budapest, received her PhD from the University of Leeds in 2001, and has worked as professor of religious history at Leeds since 2014.

The New York State Education Department has approved the proposed change of the doctoral program in Medieval Studies. The new degree name on diplomas will be: PhD in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern Studies.
Students who enrolled under the old name will graduate with the old name. Those who will enroll under the new name (those who have applied/are applying this year) will graduate with the new name. Thus applicants who will be accepted this academic year should already receive an enrollment letter with the new degree name on it.

A group of students from Koc University, Istanbul, attended the Summer Study Abroad Cultural Heritage Studies Program at CEU June 5-16.
The students, who came from KU’s College of Administrative Sciences & Economics, College of Engineering, and Law School, could select a combination of two modules in Ottoman Cultural Heritage, Central Europe, or Art Nouveau.

Tijana Krstic, associate professor in the Departments of Medieval Studies and History, and Gabor Kezdi, professor in the Department of Economics, have been named the recipients of the 2017 CEU Distinguished Teaching Award. The award recognizes CEU faculty members for promoting high standards of teaching, linked with the mission and institutional ambitions of CEU.
