CEU earned the best rankings in its history in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) subject ranking, published April 29. CEU's programs related to politics and international studies jumped to 29th in the world, and 7th in Europe.

Jean-Louis Fabiani, professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, has been promoted to the order of “Officier des arts et lettres” by the French Minister of Culture Fleur Pellerin, in recognition of his “significant contributions to the arts and literature” in France. Hungarian news portal magyarnarancs.hu reports: A memorial erected in remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust and World War II was inaugurated in ELTE’s Trefort Garden: the 1-centimeter-wide and 200-meter-long bronze strip embraces the university campus along its walls as a kind of unique grout between the bricks, bearing 199 names. The university pays homage to its former professors, students, and staff members, all of those who lost their lives as a result of the anti-Jewish laws in forced labor, concentration camps, ghettos, or military service.

PhD student in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology Ilker Corut was awarded the best translation prize of the Turkish Academy of Sciences for his translation of Dipesh Chakrabarty’s seminal book “Provincializing Europe” (Bogazici Universiy Press, 2012).

Aleksandra Lis (SOC’12) won 110,000 Euros for her project entitled “Shale gas as a new challenge for Europe: re-thinking the role of expertise in European integration processes” from the National Science Foundation at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The competition category is for young scholars SONATA.
