“It was a great success. We had ten computers, and 13 people,” summed up Daniel Szugyi (MPA ’16). The 13 people who crowded into the Student Computer Lab on the second floor of Oktober 6 utca 7 on June 1 participated in a unique event: crowdsourcing to collect data that will be used to build a database with information about accidents and violations in the garment industry of Bangladesh. The event, which was organized by the Human RigthS Initiative (HRSI) and three SPP students, attracted participants from throughout CEU.

“Dozens of civil society activists, NGO leaders, journalists, and human rights defenders have been incarcerated in Azerbaijan in recent years. Two of them,” explained Saman Sardar (MPA ’16), “are CEU alumni.” Ilgar Mammadov graduated with a degree in political economy from CEU in 1997.

CEU’s Human RightS Initiative (HRSI) organized a day-long workshop on May 16 on Drug Policy Reform Advocacy. Led by Peter Sarosi, drug policy program director of the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (HCLU), the workshop “offered a good general introduction to the global drug control system and drug policy reform,” said Zoe Kostitsi-Papastathopoulou (MPA ’16).

A student-faculty team from SPP won a best paper award for their research on drones. Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick (SPP assistant professor) and Tautvydas Juskauskas (MPA '15) received the Best Paper Award for Technical Excellence at the Humanitarian Technology (HumTech 2015) conference in May. HumTech 2015 focuses on bringing innovative solutions to the humanitarian aid community.

CEU’s School of Public Policy, the Center for European Union Research, the French Institute of Budapest, and the French Embassy organized a series of discussions at CEU on May 19 to reflect on freedom, religion, and security in the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo attack on January 7, 2015. The event was part of CEU’s Frontiers of Democracy series.

The Center for Conflict, Negotiation and Recovery (CCNR), the School of Public Policy (SPP), and the Center for EU Enlargement Studies (CENS) at Central European University hosted a one-day, student-organized international youth conference on the role of youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina's transition 20 years after the signing of the Dayton Agreement on APril 17.

Corina Ajder, Suluck Fai Lamubol, Ilija Prachkovski, and Lucia Sobekova (all MPA ’16) interviewed Martti Ahtisaari, former president of Finland and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, on April 15. The interview was organized by Jon Greenwald, vice president of theInternational Crisis Group (ICG) and SPP visiting professor.

On April 21-22, CEU students participated in the workshop “Budgeting for Human Rights: Why Government Budgets are Important for Realizing Human Rights,” organized by the Human RightS Initiative (HRSI) in collaboration with the School of Public Policy (SPP) at CEU. Participants included Roxana Damian (MPA ’15) from SPP and Edi Sara (MA ’15) from the Department of Public Policy.
