CEU alumna Bermet Tursunkulova (IRES ’99) has been appointed Deputy Minister of Education and Science for the Kyrgyz Republic.
Appointed on October 27, 2014 by order of Prime Minister Joomart Otorbaev, Bermet will now oversee issues related to higher education in Kyrgyzstan.

Peter Brocka (LEGS ’09)won the mayoral election in Trnava, one of the seven regional capitals in Slovakia, earlier this month and is slated to take office on December 12. Brocka was an independent candidate. He became visible with his nine-point plan “For a Better Trnava.”

CEU Provost and Pro-Rector Liviu Matei took advantage of his recent tour of Central Asia in October to meet with CEU alumni in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.The provost met informally with alumni in Astana and Almaty, Kazakhstan, and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and delivered the latest CEU news, plus information about recruitment and the Alumni Campaign, ceu|next.

Alumnus Konstantin Kurganov (Ukraine, LEGS ’94) made CEU history by donating $30,000 in matching funds to the Alumni Campaign, ceu|next.
This is unprecedented—the largest single gift to the campaign from a CEU graduate, to support the future of our university. “Coming to CEU was the one great chance in my life. I want other people to be able to study here, as I did, and have a better future, Kurganov explained his commitment to CEU.

CEU Alumni & Friends in Serbia is launching the Serbian Alumni Scholarship, utilizing the power of community to support promising academics from that country.
“Serbian students often don’t apply to CEU because they can’t support themselves in Budapest,” said Marko Miljkovic, fundraising coordinator for the Serbian alumni chapter. “We feel it would be a terrible waste if they were unable to come here. “

Aleksandra Lis (SOC’12) won 110,000 Euros for her project entitled “Shale gas as a new challenge for Europe: re-thinking the role of expertise in European integration processes” from the National Science Foundation at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The competition category is for young scholars SONATA.

Peter Bokody, a graduate of both the Master's and PhD programs in the Department of Medieval Studies, edited the newly published catalogue “Image and Christianity: Visual Media in the Middle Ages.” The bilingual volume (in English and Hungarian) catalogs two recent exhibitions from the Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma – one of the oldest historical monuments in Hungary. The aim of the exhibitions is to show to the viewer the various forms and media of image-worship in medieval Christianity.
