The Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the Silesian University in Opava, Czech Republic, is accepting applications for a four-month fellowship from March through June or September through December of this year. The fellowship, which carries a €1,200 monthly stipend, is for those with a PhD who have demonstrated excellence in research. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach in more than one department and have at least elementary communication skills in Czech. The application deadline is Jan. 31.

The deadline for submitting proposals to the Academic Cooperation and Research Support Office for CEU Research Support Scheme Type 2 funding is Jan. 31. Type 2 support is available to CEU departments (after they have used up their Type 1 support), research centers and research groups, as well as for joint proposals from several units. The Social Science Research Council’s Interasia Program seeks workshop papers for its “Conference on Inter-Asian Connections IV” scheduled for Oct. 2-5 in Istanbul. There are seven workshops scheduled for the conference, including one entitled “After Neoliberalism?” The Future of Postneoliberal State and Society in Asia,” which will be led by Emel Akcali, assistant professor in the Department of International Relations and European Studies at CEU. The deadline for abstracts is Feb. 11.

CEU has announced the call for nominations for its second annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The award, launched in 2011, is the first and only such pan-European honor. To be eligible, a candidate must be an instructor of any rank in the social sciences and/or humanities, currently teaching at a higher education institution in a member country of the European Higher Education Area (http://www.ehea.info/members.aspx). Current and former faculty members of CEU are not eligible.

The Humanities Initiative Fellowship at the CEU Institute for Advanced Study is a joint research/teaching program in which junior fellows are expected to spend the academic year in Budapest working on their own research project for two semesters and teaching four credits’ worth of courses at CEU for one semester. The Center for Policy Studies will host the International Sociological Association's annual RC19 (Poverty, Social Welfare and Social Policy) conference on Aug. 22-24, 2013. The RC 19 conference will bring together scholars of comparative welfare state and social policy studies who represent a range of disciplines including sociology, social policy, political science, and policy studies. Conference organizers invite papers that investigate the main social categories/mechanisms by which inequalities are constituted, legitimized, questioned, and tackled in diverse societies.

CEU will host the “Transnational Women’s Literature in Europe” conference in May 2013 in cooperation with FP7 Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship and Akademie Schloss Solitude. The conference will investigate theoretical questions related to the idea of transnational literature, focusing in particular (but not exclusively) on narratives of (re)location, transition, and mutability that appear in the literature produced by women writers. Papers on individual authors, as well as comparative and theoretical studies, are welcome. The deadline for abstracts is Jan. 15, 2013.

The National Humanities Center, North Carolina, and Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin are organizing "SIAS Summer Institutes," an interdisciplinary research program for young scholars spanning two years. The program is open to post-docs who obtained their PhD in the last five years and to PhD candidates who are studying or teaching at a European or American institution of higher education.
