Darian Pavli, an alumnus of CEU's LLM program, was elected as judge to the European Court of Human Rights in respect of Albania by the Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) of the Council of Europe on October 2.

Judit Sandor, professor in the Departments of Political Science, Legal and Gender Studies and director of the Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine (CELAB) at CEU, was elected a Governor of the World Association of Medical Law (WAML) at the 24th WAML Annual Congress held September 2-6 in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The following changes have taken effect recently in the Department of Legal Studies at CEU.
Caterina Sganga has been promoted Associate Professor, effective August 1.
Mathias Moschel has been appointed Head of the Doctoral School, effective August 1. Moschel succeeds Professor Kollonay, who continues at the Department as Professor Emerita.
As of August 2017, Nora Varro went on maternity leave. Her role as a Department Coordinator was taken over by Monika Soltesz (3197) as of August 21.

Csilla Kollonay-Lehoczky has been appointed Professor Emerita, effective August 1, 2017.
Kollonay-Lehoczky, director of the Doctoral Program, has been a professor in the Department of Legal Studies since 1992.
Her teaching and research areas cover labor and social law, European labor law, gender, non-discrimination and equal opportunity law. Through 2013 she was also at ELTE Faculty of Law as professor, the Head of the Labour and Social Law Department. Her international teaching experience covers universities in the U.S. and Europe.

Professor Tibor Tajti has been appointed Acting Head of the Department of Legal Studies at CEU, effective January 15, 2016. His appointment will continue until the Head of Department, Professor Karoly Bard, is able to return to his duties or until the end of this Academic Year. Tajti appointed Assistant Professor Eszter Polgari as the Acting Chair of the Human Rights Program until the return of Professor Bard or until the end of this Academic Year.

Tibor Varady, chair of the International Business Law Program and university professor in the Department of Legal Studies has been appointed to the rank of professor emeritus, effective August 1, 2015. Varady is an internationally-recognized scholar and expert on international commercial arbitration, private international law, and international business transactions. He was on the faculty of the Novi Sad Law School in the former Yugoslavia and served as director of its Center for International Studies for many years.

Elizabeth Garrett, former visiting faculty at CEU’s Department of Legal Studies, has been elected Cornell's 13th president, and the first woman to hold that post. Garrett taught courses in the Comparative Constitutional Law (CCL) program at CEU in academic year 1998-99, 2000-01, 2002-03 and 2004-05. As President of Cornell, she will replace David Skorton July 1, 2015.
