CEU’s School of Public Policy named Michael Dorsch assistant professor starting in its inaugural year, 2013/14. Dorsch comes to SPP with experience teaching at Miami University, the University of Illinois, and the American University of Paris. He is an applied economist whose research and teaching interests are mainly in public economics and political economics. His current research focuses on the political economy of development, with particular emphasis on the economic causes and consequences of political instability, civil conflict, and democratization.

Following consultations with the Board of Trustees, in accordance with international practice, and considering that CEU is preparing for a new stage of the project, the administration has decided to separate the management of the campus redevelopment from the management of campus services and facilities.

Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Tibor Navracsics appointed Karoly Bard, chair of CEU’s Human Rights Program, a member of the committee responsible for drafting Hungary's new code of criminal procedure. The committee is comprised of experts representing academia, the Hungarian Bar, the Curia of Hungary (the country’s highest judicial authority), and the Prosecution Service (an independent body led by the Prosecutor General). Based on scientific consensus among the members, the new code is intended to respond with well-founded solutions to the practical problems of the current one.

Gyorgy Gereby, associate professor in the Medieval Studies Department, has been awarded the Keeley Visiting Fellowship at Wadham College, University of Oxford, for the 2013/14 academic year. The fellowship is awarded based on departmental nomination. Gereby will spend this sabbatical year conducting research on Hellenistic and Early Christian political theology.

Thomas Gillis, who graduates from the Department of International Relations and European Studies this spring, has been awarded a White House Management Fellowship. This highly competitive U.S. government program enables fellows to spend a year as a full-time, paid assistant to senior White House staff, the Vice President, cabinet secretaries, and other top-ranking government officials.

Andrea Peto, associate professor in the Department of Gender Studies, has been awarded a Teaching Fellowship by the USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education. Peto will teach the course selected for the award, “Gendered Memories of the Holocaust,” in collaboration with the Open Society Archives, CEU Library, and CEU Center for Teaching and Learning, in the autumn term of 2013/14. Laszlo Csaba, university professor in the Department of International Relations and European Studies, was elected a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences at the general assembly May 6. Full members are elected from the pool of corresponding members, which consists of Hungarian citizens who, since becoming corresponding members, have produced significant academic research results in their respective fields.

Ervin Gyori, professor in the Department of Mathematics and its Applications and one of the founders of the department’s PhD program, was awarded the Academy Prize by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences earlier this month, in recognition of his outstanding work in the fields of combinatorics and extremal graph theory. Susan Zimmermann has been promoted to university professor in theDepartment of History, effective April 8, following Senate approval of aproposal by President and Rector John Shattuck. Shattuck praised her wide-ranging intellectual interests, heroutstanding research and publication record, and her long record of service tothe University.
