The South and South East Asian Studies Group (SASEAS) was formed at CEU on May 7 in response to a need for a multidisciplinary space for sharing research and ideas related to South and South East Asia, which plays an increasingly large role in global affairs. The launch event featured a screening of the film, “India Untouched: Stories of a People Apart,” a documentary on social discrimination in India.

A team of CEU Business School MBA students became divisional champions in the Intercollegiate Business Ethics Case Competition (IBECC) held in San Diego, California, May 8 to 10. Aswad Harris, William Lloyd, Virginia Mocsai, and Sarat Sarngadharan, students in the full-time MBA program, beat teams from prominent business schools including IESE, INSEAD, Warwick, the University of Oxford, and Simon Fraser University. IBECC is the oldest and most recognized business ethics competition of its kind.

In order to increase CEU's visibility by facilitating journalist access to CEU scholars, the Communications Office has published a CEU Faculty Experts List. The list offers a quick reference for media professionals seeking expert commentary. It is available on the CEU Newsroom site: http://experts.ceu.hu. Searchable by name and specialization, the list will enable journalists worldwide to identify and connect with CEU scholars. It also provides a field for links to CEU videos or articles featuring people on the list.

According to the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings, released this month, CEU’s programs in politics and international studies, as well as philosophy, scored among the best in the world again in 2013. CEU is the only university in Hungary with programs among the best 100 in the 2013 subject rankings.

Susan Zimmermann has been promoted to university professor in theDepartment of History, effective April 8, following Senate approval of aproposal by President and Rector John Shattuck. Shattuck praised her wide-ranging intellectual interests, heroutstanding research and publication record, and her long record of service tothe University.

CEU’s Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine has initiated work on a Seventh Framework Programme project on “neuro-enhancement: responsible research and innovation” (NERRI). The project, which will run for three years and involves 18 research centers across Europe, has a total budget of €3,287,632 . The CELAB research team is chaired by Director Judit Sandor.

Dan Sperber, professor in the Departments of Cognitive Science and Philosophy, has been elected an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the scientific community in Hungary. Honorary membership is awarded to non-Hungarian citizens who advance research on an internationally recognized level “and whose achievement is worthy of the special esteem of Hungarian scientific life.”

CEU has recently implemented the first stages of a comprehensive plan to expand selective waste collection infrastructure on campus. This action complies with the University’s intention to strengthen commitments to the sustainable development of our campus on a continual basis. The goal is to create a waste management system that makes it easy and convenient for all community members to dispose of waste efficiently. Much of the waste CEU produces on campus each day is recyclable.

CEU Debate Society members Alexandru Moise and Endre Borbath advanced to the finals of an international debate tournament in Split, Croatia (http://idebate.org/events/split-open-2013) , last month in a field of 20 teams from eight countries. The Department of Political Science duo, named “The Infallibles,” competed in logic, rhetoric, and argumentation. Their trip was sponsored by the society with the help from the University.

Austrian Federal Minister for Science and Research Karlheinz Tochterle met with the research team of the Department of Medieval Studies April 22 to hear about the EuroCORECODE research project “Symbols that Bind and Break Communities. Saints' Cults” http://cultsymbols.net. Austria is among the five participating countries and its team is led by Gerhard Jaritz, a lecturer at CEU. The project is based at CEU, directed by Professor Gabor Klaniczay and financed by OTKA, the Hungarian Science Research Fund.
