Philip N. Howard will join the CEU School of Public Policy (SPP) as a professor of media and communication policy and governance. Howard is currently a professor of communication, information and international studies at the University of Washington and a fellow at Princeton University's Center for Information Technology Policy. Howard also will become director of the Center for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS) at CEU, which is now part of SPP. CMCS Director Kate Coyer will continue as the Center's executive director.

Philip N. Howard, a prominent commentator on global media policy issues, will join the CEU School of Public Policy as a professor of media and communication policy and governance. Howard is currently a professor of communication, information and international studies at the University of Washington and a fellow at Princeton University's Center for Information Technology Policy. Howard’s latest book, “Democracy's Fourth Wave? Digital Media and the Arab Spring” is slated for publication by Oxford University Press this year.

Simon Rippon has joined CEU as an assistant professor, teaching in both the Department of Philosophy and at the School of Public Policy, effective December 2012. Simon received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Harvard University and holds a B.A. in Philosophy and Theology from Oxford. His research incorporates practical ethics and “metaethics,” or the study of what moral discourse and practice is about in the abstract.

Stefan Messmann, professor in the Department of Legal Studies, was elected to serve a three-year term on the Joint Managerial Committee (JMC) of the China-Europe School of Law consortium. The JMC consists of eight members, four of whom are representatives of the European member universities of the consortium. CEU is a founding member of CESL. Charles Huebner, a member of CEU Business School’s Advisory Board, has been awarded the Dr. Ivan Volgyes Award for Promotion of Hungarian-American Business Relations by the American Chamber of Commerce in Hungary. An anonymous donor has renewed a gift of 10,000 Canadian dollars “in memory of Ilona Diener” to support the 2013 CEU European Award for Excellence in Teaching in Social Sciences and Humanities. Nominations for the award, the first and only one of its kind in Europe, are accepted until Jan. 31. The award, for which CEU faculty members are not eligible, emphasizes CEU’s commitment to outstanding and innovative teaching, and is administered by the Center for Teaching and Learning.

CEU’s Open Society Archieves raised 2.4 million HUF for the Heated Street program run by Oltalom Karitativ Egyesulet at an auction of manuscripts donated by 60 well-known contemporary Hungarian poets, writers, and composers. The auction, held on the first day of winter, Dec. 21, and attended by about 100 people, was hosted by Galeria Centralis and organized in cooperation Sziget Kulturalis Szervezo Iroda, Magveto Konyvkiado and Summa Artium.

The Center for Policy Studies is now part of the “Changing Employment” Marie Curie Initial Training Network, a consortium of 11 European partner institutions aiming to train a cross-European and interdisciplinary network of policy-focused social scientists comprehensively skilled in understanding, analyzing, and responding to social and institutional employment changes.
