This month, CEU Press will release this new book by Lajos Bokros, professor in CEU’s Center for Policy Studies, member of the European Parliament, and former Hungarian minister of finance. The book offers a comprehensive overview of the post-communist transition process with insights from Bokros’ 20 years of experience.

Kiril Sharapov will join the Center for Policy Studies as a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellow in January 2013, having secured two years of research funding from the Marie Curie Actions of the European Commission's Seventh Framework Program. Dr Sharapov comes to CEU from Glasgow Caledonian University, where he was a lecturer in sociology. At CPS he will pursue a project to explore how trafficking in human beings is understood by the general public in countries of the enlarged EU and its neighboring states.

Agnes Batory, associate professor and research fellow in the Department of Public Policy, has been promoted to the rank of professor. Her promotion was effective Oct. 10. She will be returning from maternity leave by the end of November.

During its regular meeting in Budapest on Oct. 28, the CEU Board of Trustees elected Robert Soros as a new member. Soros is the president and deputy chairman of Soros Fund Management LLC, where he has worked since 1994. Prior to joining SFM he worked for Schroeder Munchmeyer & Hengst in its equity research department and for Prudential Bache in its risk arbitrage department. Soros is the chairman of Haleakala, also known as The Kitchen, a not–for-profit performance arts organization.

The most recent CEU Alumni Campaign raised more than $41,200, enabling CEU to award 21 scholarships this academic year—the largest number in a single year since its inception. Every year since 2001, CEU has awarded the CEU Alumni Scholarship to outstanding students who have shown a commitment to community service and who have demonstrated their potential to become leaders at CEU and in their future careers. The program is funded exclusively by donations from CEU alumni and friends.

Dorit Geva, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, has received a €75,000 Marie Curie grant from the European Commission. The grant will fund research on the rise of women from political dynasties in party politics, such as France’s Marine Le Pen and Argentina's Christina Kirchner.

Darren Schreiber joined the Department of Political Science as a visiting researcher at the Political Behavior Research Group (PolBeRG) in September. Schreiber, assistant professor at the University of California, San Diego, conducts research on functional brain imaging (fMRI) to study the neural substrates of differences in political behavior between people who know a lot about politics and those who do not. Schreiber will collaborate with the PolBeRG group for two years.
