The European Association for International Education presented the 2018 Constance Meldrum Award for Vision and Leadership to CEU President and Rector Michael Ignatieff on September 11 in Geneva at the kickoff of its annual conference. The award recognizes CEU's defense of academic freedom in Hungary after legislation targeting the university was introduced in 2017.

CEU President and Rector Michael Ignatieff receives an honorary degree by the University of Edinburgh at a ceremony July 3, 2018. "The Senatus Academicus of this University has resolved to invite you to be admitted to the honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Social Science for your championship of liberal values as an academic, writer, and journalist," wrote Professor Sir Timothy O'Shea, principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, in a letter informing Ignatieff of the honor.

In recognition of the University's communications campaigns in response to the attack on its academic freedom, CEU has been awarded the Council of Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence Gold Award in the Crisis Communications category. CASE, founded in 1974, is a membership association serving educational institutions and the advancement professionals who work on their behalf in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas.

The Governing Body of the University of Oxford’s St Antony’s College has elected CEU President and Rector Michael Ignatieff as its Honorary Fellow on May 3.

CEU President and Rector Michael Ignatieff was appointed to the Order of Canada Dec. 30, the country's highest honor. Ignatieff was recognized for his “contributions to the advancement of knowledge as a human-rights scholar and reporter.”
