CEU’s Center for Network Science and Cognitive Development Center were the first two recipients of Horizon 2020 research grants announced recently.
The Center for Network Science won a Collaborative Research Grant under Future and Emerging Technologies (FET ICT) for its research project entitled “CIMPLEX: Bringing CItizens, Models and Data together in Participatory, Interactive SociaL EXploratories.” The purpose of the project is to do basic research on ICT related data about diverse spreading phenomena in the society from diseases to innovations.

CEU's Center for Media and Communication Studies is participating in VOX-Pol, a five-year, €5.1 million research consortium that will focus on researching the prevalence, contours, functions, and impacts of violent online political extremism and responses to it.

Center for Policy Studies (CPS) Research Fellows Violetta Zentai and Vera Messing are participants in the European Commission-funded ASSESS Research Project (Assessing Integration Measures for Vulnerable Migrant Groups), which monitors and assesses the effectiveness of integration measures for three vulnerable migrant groups – women, children and victims of trafficking. The assessment aims to identify the strengths and weaknesses in the application of the Common Basic Principles on Migrant Integration when it comes to the integration of vulnerable migrant groups.

CEU Cognitive Science Associate Professor Natalie Sebanz received a €2 million Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council for her project “JAXPERTISE,” that will explore how humans learn to coordinate their actions with others, and how they learn from each other through collaboration. Sebanz's project will break new ground by identifying the behavioral, cognitive, and neural mechanisms underlying the learning of joint action, with a special focus on music and dance.

Professors Gyorgy Gergely, Gunther Knoblich, and Dan Sperber of the Department of Cognitive Science received a €9.6 million Synergy Grant from the European Research Council, together with their colleague Josep Call, director of the Wolfgang Kohler Primate Research Center at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. The prestigious Synergy Grants are given to top researchers in all disciplines for groundbreaking research projects that significantly advance the frontiers of knowledge.

CEU’s Center for European Union Research (CEUR), represented by faculty members Marie-Pierre Granger, Andrea Krizsan, and Uwe Puetter, is part of a new European research consortium of 26 universities that won a joint bid for a €6.5 million research grant under the European Union Seventh Framework Programme. The “bEUcitizen,” project, which involves research from legal studies, sociology, political science, history, and economics, aims to study the implementation and practice of European Union citizenship. The consortium is led by the University of Utrecht.

The Center for Policy Studies will take part in the CONFRONT Research Project, which aims to strengthen counter-trafficking efforts targeting Roma children as vulnerable group. CONFRONT will focus on three new forms of trafficking affecting children in Roma communities: child begging, labor exploitation for pickpocketing, and sexual exploitation of boys. Activities will take place in seven EU member states.

The Center for Ethics and Biomedicine (CELAB) received a grant enabling it to initiate work this month on a new FP7 research project, "Cell-based regenerative medicine: new challenges for EU legislation and governance.” Total funding of all partners by the Commission is €500,000. Judit Sandor, professor in the departments of Political Science, Legal Studies, and Gender Studies, will lead the portion of the project that concerns stem cell sources and procurement.

Professor Laszlo Matyas and the Department of Economics have been awarded a European FP7 grant as part of a nine-member consortium to study the state of economics research in Europe and to make proposals for future research funding mechanisms. This €1.6 million FP7 project brings together outstanding European academic institutions with the support of the European Economic Association to create the COEURE (COoperation for EUropean Research in Economics) network.

Peter Kondor, associate professor in the Department of Economics, has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council Starting Grant amounting to €1.1 million for a five-year research project entitled "Frictions in Financial Markets." Economics Department faculty and researchers are currently carrying out research projects funded by four ERC Starting Grants.
