Kristina Irion, assistant professor in the departments of Public Policy and Legal Studies, has won a prestigious Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship to conduct a two-year research project on the “Governance of Digital Information.” The project will be carried out at the Center for Information Law (IViR) at the University of Amsterdam. Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowships support the academic mobility of experienced researchers to conduct high-level research within the European Union as part of a larger effort to promote the excellence of the European Research Area.

CEU’s departments of International Relations and European Studies (IRES) and Legal Studies have been awarded a grant from the Open Society Foundations to focus on capacity-building and faculty development in international relations and law in Myanmar. The project will be coordinated by Matteo Fumagalli and Renata Uitz, head of IRES and Legal Studies, respectively. Beginning in fall 2013, faculty in both departments will work with partners at the University of Yangon and the University of Mandalay.

CEU’s Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine has initiated work on a Seventh Framework Programme project on “neuro-enhancement: responsible research and innovation” (NERRI). The project, which will run for three years and involves 18 research centers across Europe, has a total budget of €3,287,632 . The CELAB research team is chaired by Director Judit Sandor.

CEU’s Center for Policy Studies is collaborating with seven universities in the Reducing Early School Leaving in the EU (RESL.eu) research project, which received a total of €6,483,000 in funding through the European Commission’s 7th Framework Program. The project aims to provide insights into the mechanisms and processes that influence a student’s decision to leave school or training early, as well as into the decision of school leavers to enroll in alternative learning arenas unrelated to a regular school.

The Center for Policy Studies is now part of the “Changing Employment” Marie Curie Initial Training Network, a consortium of 11 European partner institutions aiming to train a cross-European and interdisciplinary network of policy-focused social scientists comprehensively skilled in understanding, analyzing, and responding to social and institutional employment changes.

The first finances a three-day workshop for 10 staff members to strengthen their skills and build confidence in designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating professional training. Dorit Geva, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, has received a €75,000 Marie Curie grant from the European Commission. The grant will fund research on the rise of women from political dynasties in party politics, such as France’s Marine Le Pen and Argentina's Christina Kirchner.

Balazs Vedres, associate professor and director of the Center for Network Science, won a research grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation in partnership with David Stark of Columbia University. Their research will investigate the social network sources of creativity. While there is considerable network research on innovation adoption, little is known about the network structures that can contribute to innovation generation.

Six researchers in four centers and two departments have won EU grants for teams participating in collaborative research consortia funded by the Seventh Framework Program for Research and Technological Development.
