Laszlo Jakab, a student in CEU’s Roma Access Programs, spoke of his path from the poorest part of the small town of Kistelek, Hungary, to a college degree and enrollment in RAP in an interview published in the Oct. 6 edition of Nok Lapja, Hungary’s biggest-selling weekly magazine, with a circulation of 217,000.
Agoston Berecz, a second-year doctoral student in the Department of History, recently published his first book, “The Politics of Early Language Teaching: Hungarian in the Primary Schools of the Late Dual Monarchy.” It’s the first volume of Pasts, Inc. Studies and Working Papers, a new publishing initiative of Pasts, Inc. Center for Historical Studies. The series is edited by Constantin Iordachi and Balazs Trencsenyi, associate professors in the department and co-heads of CEU’s Pasts, Inc.
Frank G. Karioris, a PhD candidate in gender studies; Emily D. Saras, who graduated this June with an MA in sociology and social anthropology; and Claudia Manta, a PhD student in gender studies, were inspired by CEU’s new interdisciplinary Science Studies Certificate program to launch a new academic journal called Pulse.
When Ivonig Corfmat decided to take the Bloomberg Aptitude Test, he wanted to find out how well his financial skills had developed since he began CEU Business School’s full-time MBA program last September. He wasn’t expecting the results: the fifth highest score among test takers in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, placing him in the Bloomberg Hall of Fame for May’s test.
CEU Business School students Aswad Harris, William Lloyd, Virginia Mocsai and Sarat Sarngadharan beat teams from prominent business schools to win the divisional championship at the Intercollegiate Business Ethics Case Competition (IBECC) in San Diego this month. The students were enrolled in the “Ethical Leaders in Business” course, taught by Professor Peter Hardi, which inspired and assisted them in terms of content. They put in weeks of work into preparing the case with Hardi’s assistance, and stepped up their preparations with the help of Professors Tibor Voros and Jay Fogelman.
Adrienn Kacsor, an M.A. student in the Department of History, and fellow students Adela Hincu and Alexandra Preda, want CEU’s new library to be the best it can be, so they decided to gather input from primary users of the library, the students.
“So many things happen in Hungary, but for international students it’s hard to get information about scandals between Hungary and the European Union, for example,” says Agnes Kelemen, an editor at the student-published CEU Weekly. “It’s important to channel Hungarian news for the CEU audience.”
Denise Nijhuis, Miranda Myrberg, Wietske Nijman, Inga Popovaite, and Dora Vajai decided to take their interest beyond the classroom, launching the Nationalism Studies blog at http://nationalismstudiesnetwork.wordpress.com/. The blog is a vibrant collection of the latest articles, books, videos, calls for papers, and scholarship or fellowship opportunities in the field.
“We’re all part of the problem, but we’re all part of the solution,” says Elana Hawke, an MSc student in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy who asked students, faculty, and staff to have themselves photographed with their pledge to reduce waste in their own lives at the WasteFest event March 19-21. The event highlighted the amount of waste produced by the CEU community every day. “I wanted people to think of something in their lives that they could change. Taking a photo made them more accountable, and took the message further.”
Working with people within CEU and around the world, Kristina Georgieva (Department of Economics, Economic Policy in Global Markets, two-year MA), took the lead in convening the Budapest Open 2013 Debate Tournament held the weekend of March 1-3. This was the second year in a row that the CEU Debate Society hosted the international tournament, both times in conjunction with Corvinus and ELTE universities.
