Tautvydas Juskauskas (MPA ’15) took home second place at the Falling Walls Lab in Ljubljana, Slovenia for his work on estimating crowd sizes using drones. Falling Walls Labs are held in numerous cities around the world and provide young academics and professionals with opportunities to present their innovative ideas, research, and initiatives.
On March 21, School of Public Policy (SPP) students and staff spent the day volunteering with the Roma community in Bag, Hungary. Working with local NGO BAGazs, SPP students and staff helped members of the Roma settlement in Bag build a fence around a plot of land that will be used for agriculture. This fence will help keep animals away from crops.
School of Public Policy (SPP) students have a track record of fostering deep engagement with local communities. Four students have shown strong interest and commitment in working with Roma communities: Marek Balaz (MPA ’16), Katalin Nemeth (MPA ’16), Ciprian-Valentin Nodis (MPA ’15), and Erjon Qirollari (MPA ’15). Each of these students took the time to share his or her story with SPP.
Fourteen CEU students and faculty had the opportunity to join representatives of five other Hungarian universities and attend an informal meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit to Budapest on Feb. 5. The event was hosted by Andrassy University Budapest.
Shorob.com, a Bengalese youth platform founded by Nuruddin Ahmed (MPA ’16), won the Social Media for Empowerment Award 2014 in the “Communication, Advocacy & Development Activism” category. The award is an initiative of the Digital Empowerment Foundation, a New Delhi-based organization that aims “to find sustainable Information Communication Technology (ICT) solutions…to address [the] digital divide in underserved and unreached regions and communities.”
Founded by Nuruddin Ahmed (MPA ’16), youth platform shorob.com is a finalist for the Social Media for Empowerment Award 2014 in the Community, Advocacy, and Development Activism category. “I’m very excited to be in the running with great organizations across South Asia,” Ahmed commented.
