On November 27, on its fifth anniversary, Philanthropy Day became Philanthropy Week, full of exciting events everyone could get involved in. I had the chance to be part of Bake it >> Make it >>Forward, a very special event that encouraged the members of the CEU community to show off their baking skills by preparing sweet or savory treats or national specialties; and to share their skills which could be useful to their community, such as fixing laptops and more. (This was a twist from last year Bake it forward!)

To cap off Philanthropy Week at CEU, the Student Philanthropy Council and the Alumni Relations office organized a Pub Quiz on Friday night. Philanthropy week, an expanded version of Philanthropy day which has been held annually at CEU, emphasized the importance of philanthropy and expressing gratitude to the people who support CEU.

In today’s world, where there is shrinking space for civil society, young people can transform their concern into opportunities to enable change, according to Franz-Karl Prueller, senior advisor to the board at ERSTE Foundation, a longtime partner of CEU. Prueller addressed the CEU community Nov. 29 in a talk entitled “Advancing Civil Society and Social Innovation in Central Europe: Lessons in Social Investing from the ERSTE Foundation,” as part of CEU’s Philanthropy Week 2017.

Seven Alumni Scholarship Recipients took action to make a difference and get some hands-on experience in giving back, by forming CEU’s first Student Philanthropy Council. The council’s mission is simple: find new and fun ways to raise funds and educate the community about the importance of philanthropy.

Zsuzsanna Jaszberenyi, director of Admissions at CEU, started her campaign for homeless people in 2009, when Budapest shelters ran out of funds and couldn’t provide food for the homeless. “Families were encouraged to cook for people in need. After doing so for a while at home, I shared the call with the CEU community, and we repeat the drive every year,” Jaszberenyi says.

The CEU Board of Trustees were treated to a special screening of documentary films by CEU students on June 24. The "Best of the Mirabaud Media Lab" event was a highlight in an intense weekend and an opportunity to engage directly with students and a new initiative at CEU.

Three CEU programs have been awarded the prestigious status of Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMD). The European Union’s Erasmus Mundus program aims to make studying in Europe more attractive for students from around the world by supporting outstanding joint programs in areas where Europe excels.

Key seminar space in CEU's new Nador 15 building is now known as the Nimetz Classroom, honoring CEU Trustee Matthew Nimetz's generous support of the University as a center of debate and discussion. Nimetz met with CEU President and Rector Michael Ignatieff and Provost Liviu Matei February 16 in the new classroom, then participated in a class taught there by Assistant Professor Roberta Sinatra of CEU's Center for Network Science, home to Europe's first doctoral program in this cutting-edge field.
