“The Future of Roma Cultural Heritage,” the first event in Budapest held by the European Roma Institute of Arts and Culture (ERIAC), featured a lively exchange of knowledge and experience among experts from academia and the arts. The event was co-organized by ERIAC, CEU’s Romani Studies Program, and the European Union-funded "Re-designing Access to European Cultural Heritage" (REACH) project at Eotvos Lorand University (ELTE).

Building on a long tradition of supporting Romani scholars and scholarship, CEU launched its new Romani Studies Program in August 2017 and celebrated the launch on October 19. The Program is a new model for international education, a center for study of contemporary economic, social and political challenges as well as a source of support for building open and democratic societies that respect human rights and human dignity. CEU's Roma Access Programs (RAP) was transformed into the Romani Studies Program (RSP) as of August 1, 2017.

On June 23,18 Roma students will graduate from the Roma Graduate Preparation Program (RGPP), becoming alumni of the Roma Access Programs and CEU. As part of the celebration of their accomplishments, the students presented research in their fields in a two-day conference event June 19-20, 2017.

Eleven Roma leaders and U.S. State Senator Kevin Killer gathered at CEU May 22-23, 2017 to discuss political narratives regarding minorities at the workshop and panel discussion entitled “Empowering Roma Young Leaders to Shape Inclusive Narratives.” The event was part of a project by Roland Ferkovics within the context of the German Marshall Fund of the United States’ (GMF) Office of Transatlantic Leadership Initiatives, and was supported by the GMF and CEU’s Roma in European Societies Initiative.

Earlier this year, CEU announced the Roma in European Societies (RES) initiative that will support existing CEU work and encourage new efforts on Roma issues across disciplines at the University.
