The Roma Access Programs (RAP) held its annual year-end Roma Graduate Preparation Program (RGPP) student seminar on June 16-17, in which all 22 RGPP students presented their final research papers to an audience consisting of their peers, their academic tutors and English teachers, CEU faculty, as well as alumni, donor representatives, and friends of the program.

Joci Marton, who completed the Roma English Language Program and is now graduating from the Roma Graduate Preparation Program, volunteers with Uccu, a Hungarian NGO that facilitates dialogue between Roma and non-Roma elementary and middle school students.

One of the volunteers, Joci Marton (28) grew up in Nograd county. Currently a CEU student, he used to teach Roma folk studies in a school in the 8th district.

In order to share experiences and exchange strategies, CEU's Roma Access Programs (RAP) invited American community organizing expert David Beckwith and Hungarian experts to the lecture “Empowering Vulnerable Communities Through Grassroots Organizing: Examples from U.S. and Eastern Europe.” Beckwith, who has over 40 years of community organizing experience, truly believes that organizing works. He started a training center for community organizing after working his first job in the field in an African-American neighborhood in Providence, Rhode Island.

Laszlo Jakab, a student in CEU’s Roma Access Programs, spoke of his path from the poorest part of the small town of Kistelek, Hungary, to a college degree and enrollment in RAP in an interview published in the Oct. 6 edition of Nok Lapja, Hungary’s biggest-selling weekly magazine, with a circulation of 217,000.

Nők Lapja (26-28. oldal) A kisteleki cigánytelepről származik. Nem akart továbbtanulni, sem az általános iskolában, sem a középiskolában nem fordult meg a fejében, hogy magasabb iskolába menjen. As Hungary awaits the verdict in the trial of four men accused of murdering six Roma, the country’s Roma community is reflecting on the 69 years that have passed since the mass murders of Roma at Nazi concentration camps and wondering what, if anything, has changed.
