YSI was created under the rubric of the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET), which was founded by George Soros and colleagues in 2009.

Alessandro De Chiara, assistant professor in the Department of Economics, was awarded the Goran Skogh Award for young scholars for the most promising paper presented at the 33rd Annual Conference of the European Association of Law and Economics (EALE) in Bologna. The award, given in the memory of Goran Skogh, first President of EALE, aims to encourage outstanding young scholars of law and economics to remain in academia.
