Three CEU professors and an alumnus presented recently published books dealing with various aspects of Jewish history at a book launch December 6 hosted by the Jewish Studies Program at CEU.

The Last Days of Stalin, the latest book by Joshua Rubenstein, associate at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University, demystified a very unique period of Soviet history at a book launch at CEU on May 3.
Beyond his scholarship, Joshua Rubenstein is a long-time human rights leader, CEU President and Rector John Shattuck said in his introduction. Current Russian leadership is trying to copy some of Stalin’s methods, and his views on nationality and control over borderlands are shaping Russian approach today, Shattuck added.

The Department of History at Central European University (CEU) hosted colleagues from the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) March 17-18 in Budapest for a workshop entitled “The Violence of Memory and the Memory of Violence in European History.” The workshop is the second between the two institutions, part of a partnership that includes fellowships and faculty exchanges.

Marsha Siefert, associate professor in the Department of History, is currently the inaugural fellow in the study of Russia and Ballet, co-sponsored by the Center for Ballet & the Arts and the Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia, both at New York University.
