Medals and shells, the remnants of natural and human past, are often seen as clues leading to different ways of thinking about the world. But is it possible that thinking about shells may enrich our understanding of medals? CEU Early Modern Studies Junior Research Fellow, Tomasz Grusiecki, is one of the two winners of the 2018 Emerging Scholars Publication Prize awarded by the Historians of German, Scandinavian and Central European Art. He received this honor for his article 'Foreign as Native: Baltic Amber in Florence'. World Art 7, no. 1 (2017): 3-36.

As part of the Intellectual Themes Initiative, CEU offers four new joint PhD positions this year. The new doctoral programs are interdepartmental: the admitted students are expected to take courses from both participating units and conduct research at the crossroads of those disciplines.

Historians studying the medieval and early modern period take different approaches to reconstruct personhood and its models, according to Gadi Algazi, professor and head of the Department of History at Tel Aviv University, and associate research fellow at Humboldt University, Berlin. Algazi spoke at CEU November 6-9 as part of the Natalie Zemon Davis Annual Lecture Series, hosted by the Department of Medieval Studies and the Department of History.

Jan Hennings, associate professor at CEU's Department of History, received the prize "for most outstanding recent scholarly monograph on pre-modern Slavdom" awarded by the Early Slavic Studies Association (ESSA) during its meeting at the 49th Annual Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European & Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) in Chicago in November 2017.
