This year the Danubius Award was awarded to Bela Greskovits, university professor in the Departments of International Relations and Political Science at CEU. The award was established in 2011 by the Austrian Ministry of Education, Science and Resesearch and the Institute for Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM). The prize was awarded at the Danube Rectors' Conference in Bratislava on November 8.

CEU has expanded its academic activities in New York in cooperation with Bard College, with second-year students in CEU’s MA in International Relations program studying with CEU faculty alongside internships at well-known international organizations. The students earn credit toward their U.S.-accredited degree.

Peter Balazs, professor in the Department of International Relations and director of the Center for European Neighborhood Studies, received the Knight Commander's Cross of the Republic of Germany in recognition of his significant contribution to German-Hungarian relations and the development of Europe. Balazs received the distinction from Lieselore Cyrus, charge d'affaires of the German Embassy in Budapest, in a ceremony May 24.

Associate Professor Xymena Kurowska of the Department of International Relations has been awarded a two-year Marie-Curie Fellowship by the European Commission. Her project, RefBORDER, deals with theory and practice of reflexivity as capacity in European border guards training. It aims to contribute to more democratic European border security practice through developing better training scenarios in cooperation with practitioners.

CEU Professor Peter Balazs, director of the Center for EU Enlargement Studies (CENS) and former Hungarian foreign minister, was awarded the Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award by Tufts University in February.
"In the recognition of your integrity and valor as Foreign Minister, encouraging respect for humanities values and rule of law and fighting discrimination," the award said.

In this work Erin Kristin Jenne, professor in CEU’s Department of International Relations, asserts that international conflict management is almost never a straightforward case of success or failure. Instead, external mediators may reduce communal tensions at one point but utterly fail at another point, even if the incentives for conflict remain unchanged.
