Peter Brocka (LEGS ’09)won the mayoral election in Trnava, one of the seven regional capitals in Slovakia, earlier this month and is slated to take office on December 12. Brocka was an independent candidate. He became visible with his nine-point plan “For a Better Trnava.”

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), since 1992, a staggering 1,072 journalists have been killed and in more than half of these cases, the murderers went unpunished. Recently, the beheadings of two Western journalists at the hands of ISIS shocked the world and, perhaps, opened more people's eyes to the dangers journalists face. However, threats, harassment and bodily injury are not limited to journalists working in war zones or those who live and work in places where media is tightly controlled.

Elizabeth Garrett, former visiting faculty at CEU’s Department of Legal Studies, has been elected Cornell's 13th president, and the first woman to hold that post. Garrett taught courses in the Comparative Constitutional Law (CCL) program at CEU in academic year 1998-99, 2000-01, 2002-03 and 2004-05. As President of Cornell, she will replace David Skorton July 1, 2015.

Video of CEU Partners with Myanmar Higher Education
CEU, with support and funding from the Open Society Higher Education Support Program, hosted seven fellows from Myanmar, teachers from three major universities - University of Yangon, Mandalay University and Dagon University. The visit is part of OSF's broader partnership with CEU to assist Myanmar in higher education reform - introduce new subjects, substance and style of teaching in the social sciences and expose and link the Myanmar academics to international debates, networks and resources.

On May 27 OSA hosted the presentation of Timothy William Waters’ book entitled “The Milosevic Trial – An Autopsy," a cross-disciplinary examination of the longest, most controversial war crimes trial of the modern era. The author was joined by CEU's Rector John Shattuck, former Chief Prosecutor of ICTY Richard Goldstone, and Legal Studies Professor Tibor Varady in a discussion of the "trial of the century."

The first meeting of the Mobilization and Mutual Learning (MML) exercise under the Neuro-Enhancement: Responsible Research and Innovation (Grant Agreement No: 321464) EU 7th Framework research project was organized by CEU’s Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine (CELAB) on April 11.
