Hungarian weekly Magyar Narancs investigates through a recent Hungarian theatre play and German examples the limitations artists might have to face when dealing with contemporary social issues. Renata Uitz, chair of the Comparative Constitutional Law Program at CEU’s Department of Legal Studies claims a dialogue is needed between the artists and those portrayed before the artwork is published, as court decisions might create a dangerous precedent of limiting artists in dealing with contemporary social matters.

Sejal Parmar, assistant professor of law in the Department of Legal Studies at CEU, is one of ten expert contributors of “Journalism at Risk,” a new book from the Council of Europe examining the role of journalism in democratic societies. Parmar’s chapter analyzes the “The international human rights protection of journalists.”

Professor Tibor Tajti of the Department of Legal Studies and Assistant Professor Levente Littvay of the Department of Political Science were chosen as the recipients of the 2015 CEU Distinguished Teaching Award. The awards were conferred at CEU’s 25th Academic Year Opening Ceremony on September 21, 2015.

CEU alumnus Adam Bodnar (LEGS ’01) was elected Ombudsman by a vote of the Polish Parliament in July 2015. After the Senate confirmed his appointment, Bodnar took office on September 9. According to Polska Newsweek, he will serve as “the vanguard of change, warn politicians against potential risks to individual rights, and criticize when they take actions that threaten them.”
