The lectures were accompanied by lively discussions among colleagues and PhD students.

CEU's Department of Mathematics and its Applications and the Renyi Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences co-hosted the Laszlo Fejes Toth Centennial Conference June 22-26 with 115 participants from 40 countries. Noted speakers included Abel Prize laureate Endre Szemeredi, Wolf Prize laureate Laszlo Lovasz and Rotschild Prize laureate Gil Kalai.

The Senate approved the following new academic programs at its March 20 meeting. The decisions on new degree programs enter into force only after program registration by the New York State Education Department. This will be announced separately.
The Senate approved the following new academic programs:
- One-year MS program in Mathematics and its Applications;
- Advanced Certificate in Eastern Mediterranean Studies.

Ervin Gyori, professor at CEU’s Department of Mathematics, was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary by the President of the Republic of Hungary Janos Ader on March 15. Gyori, who is also a senior research fellow at the Alfred Renyi Institute of Mathematics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, received the award in recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements in discrete mathematics and his manifold activities in organizing Hungarian scientific life.

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) has approved the proposed changes of degree names at the Department of History, Department of Medieval Studies, and Department of Mathematics and its Applications.
