How do viruses spread or how to model liquidity? Among many other fundamental topics in everyday life or high-level mathematics, this question was in focus at the Workshop on Differential Equations at CEU April 4-6. The workshop grew out of the School in Differential Equations of Professor Gheorghe Morosanu, former head of CEU’s Department of Mathematics and its Applications.

CEU's Department of Mathematics and its Applications and the Renyi Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences co-hosted the Laszlo Fejes Toth Centennial Conference June 22-26 with 115 participants from 40 countries. Noted speakers included Abel Prize laureate Endre Szemeredi, Wolf Prize laureate Laszlo Lovasz and Rotschild Prize laureate Gil Kalai.

Ervin Gyori, professor at CEU’s Department of Mathematics, was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary by the President of the Republic of Hungary Janos Ader on March 15. Gyori, who is also a senior research fellow at the Alfred Renyi Institute of Mathematics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, received the award in recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements in discrete mathematics and his manifold activities in organizing Hungarian scientific life.
