Carved red marble blocks, fragments of tile, stained pieces of wrought iron – these are a few of the “archaeological finds” at the construction site of the new CEU building at Nador utca 15. Students in CEU’s Cultural Heritage Studies Program visited the site in March, uncovering these gems from another era in the history of downtown Budapest.

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) has approved the proposed changes of degree names at the Department of History, Department of Medieval Studies, and Department of Mathematics and its Applications.

CEU’s campus redevelopment project, now underway on Nador utca in downtown Budapest, provides fertile ground for the study of historic buildings and the challenge of renovating them for modern use in an urban environment. Students in CEU’s Cultural Heritage Studies Program donned hard hats and reflective vests for a tour of the Nador utca 13 and 15 buildings to explore the history and plans.

2014 was an especially prolific year for the Department of History: as authors and (co-)editors, faculty members published altogether 12 books with leading international academic publishers.
The chronological coverage is from late antiquity to communist times, the geographic spread is truly transnational (even transcontinental and global), and the topics and approaches range from religious studies, political thought and intellectual history, through history of science and history of empires, to questions of identity, social and political history.

As an expression of CEU's commitment to strengthen the humanities, a call was issued earlier this year inviting proposals by CEU faculty members. The aim of the Humanities Initiative is to provide incentives for new cross-departmental and interdisciplinary research and teaching activities in the humanities (and to help existing ones to gain a firmer footing), and to infuse our social science programs with perspectives, approaches and accomplishments taken from the humanities.

As in previous years, CEU participated in the annual nationwide project, Cultural Heritage Days, Hungary (Kulturális Örökség Napjai), part of European Heritage Days, on Sept. 20 and 21. CEU’s participation was organized by the Center for Arts and Culture, the Cultural Heritage Studies Program, and the External Relations Office.

The Annual of Medieval Studies, celebrates its 20th year by reporting on the Department’s own 20th anniversary. The anniversary volume includes a two-voice presentation on “Latin and Greek Middle Ages” by visiting professors Patrick Geary from Princeton University and Claudia Rapp from the University of Vienna.The Annual also presents a selection of articles by recently graduated MA students, offering a wide range of subjects, chronologically, topically, and geographically.

CEU welcomes students this month to its new two-year master’s program, Cultural Heritage Studies: Academic Research, Policy, Management, which was accredited by the State Education Department/The University of the State of New York in May 2014. The program aims to educate future heritage practitioners through developing aptitudes for critical assessment, the ability to reflect on major and minor, theoretical and practical, issues of managing or otherwise treating cultural heritage.

Hungarian news portal vs.hu reported on what foreigners like about living in Hungary. They interviewed six young people who came to Budapest and stayed. Derya and Gabriela, who study at CEU’s Department of Medieval Studies, emphasized the architecture, which carries the imprint of the past centuries like a living book of history. Derya, who comes from Turkey, was amazed by how much freedom people have here. ”In Hungary, everybody behaves and dresses anyway they like! In my country, if somebody looks and acts different, people exclude them and speak ill of them.
