CEU opened its doors to visitors during the European Heritage Days September 17-18. CEU students, alumni, the Cultural Heritage Studies Program, the Civic Engagement Office and the External Relations Office worked together to plan and conduct the activities celebrating the heritage that CEU safeguards and opens to the public in downtown Budapest. CEU offered thematic guided tours on campus in English and Hungarian. Registered tour participants over the two days numbered 329, and more than 1OO casual visitors also dropped in for a chat or a quick look around CEU’s new campus buildings.

Gabor Klaniczay, University Professor at the Department of Medieval Studies, has been awarded the International Prize for History CISH for the excellence of his work. With the insights of historical anthropology, Klaniczay researches the historical uses of heresy, sainthood, visions, stigmatics, magic, and witchcraft. The award will be delivered during the General Assembly of the International Committee of Historical Sciences (CISH) in September 2017 in Moscow.

Edited by Professor Gerhard Jaritz and Associate Professor Katalin Szende of the Department of Medieval Studies at CEU, Medieval East Central Europe in a Comparative Perspective, draws together the new perspectives concerning the relevance of East Central Europe for current historiography by placing the region in various comparative contexts. The chapters compare conditions within East Central Europe, as well as between East Central Europe, the rest of the continent, and beyond.

"One of the great things about Cultural Heritage Studies," explains first-year student Camilo Montoya, "is that its scope is so large you get to look at everything." That is exactly what Montoya is doing as he explores how best to rebuild the Aleppo Souk, Al-Madina. Although his background is in art history, Montoya has always been interested in contemporary issues.

CEU Alumna Kyra Lyublyanovics’s (MEDS MA ‘08, PhD ‘15) dissertation, entitled 'The Socio-Economic Integrations of Cumans in Medieval Hungary - An Archaeozoological Approach' earned an Honorable Mention at the Andras Kubinyi Foundation for Medieval Studies award ceremony. The paper deals with animal bone remains recovered from archaeological sites from the Cuman habitation area, in the 13th-16th centuries.
