CEU’s Philosophy department is a valued member of the international academic community and its presence in Hungary has added enormously to the reputation of Hungarian academic life on the international stage. The government’s proposed legislation to alter CEU’s statute of operation will be disastrous to Hungary’s international academic stature and to its ability to educate its students to a standard that enables them to compete with the best and brightest from across the globe.

In light of recent legislation, rammed through the Hungarian Parliament in unseemly haste; legislation that, if enacted, would jeopardize the continuing operation of your institution or at the very least endanger its independence, we - the members of the Philosophy Departments of Rutgers University, New Brunswick and Newark - write to express our joint support for the Central European University, and our deep concern about the Hungarian government's attack on academic freedom and excellence.

The Philosophy Department at CEU enjoys a stellar international reputation – in fact, it is among the very best departments in Europe. Disrupting its academic life would be a serious loss for the profession everywhere, but it would be especially devastating for Hungarian philosophy and Hungarian academia. It would likely result in the departure of a number of outstanding thinkers and waning cooperation with Hungary by researchers and scholars from throughout the English-speaking world.
