This year the Danubius Award was awarded to Bela Greskovits, university professor in the Departments of International Relations and Political Science at CEU. The award was established in 2011 by the Austrian Ministry of Education, Science and Resesearch and the Institute for Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM). The prize was awarded at the Danube Rectors' Conference in Bratislava on November 8.

Judit Sandor, professor in the Departments of Political Science, Legal and Gender Studies and director of the Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine (CELAB) at CEU, was elected a Governor of the World Association of Medical Law (WAML) at the 24th WAML Annual Congress held September 2-6 in Tel Aviv, Israel.

CEU Alumna Reyhan Durmaz was named a 2018 Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellow by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. The Newcombe Fellowship fosters the original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences. Durmaz's dissertation is titled “Stories, Saints, and Sanctity between Christianity and Islam.”

CEU alumnus Jakub Leps (POLS ’98) was recently elected Prague chairman for the TOP 09 political party. Elected for the two-year term in January, his tasks will focus on managing the party and campaigning ahead of this fall’s local and senate elections.
Leps also serves as Third Deputy Mayor of Prague’s 11th District, a role which he says he will continue.

As part of the Intellectual Themes Initiative, CEU offers four new joint PhD positions this year. The new doctoral programs are interdepartmental: the admitted students are expected to take courses from both participating units and conduct research at the crossroads of those disciplines.

Tallinn University hosted the New Human Rights of the 21st Century conference on September 20-22 to explore the origins of such rights, the functions and the rhetoric of these rights and the role such “new” rights can play in the field of human rights law. The conference was part of the HURMUR: Human rights – mutually raising excellence project, funded by the European Commission.

CEU alumna Olena Tregub (POLS '05) has been appointed Secretary General of the Independent Defence Anti-Corruption Committee (NAKO), a joint initiative of Transparency International Defence and Security (the UK) and the Ukrainian chapter of Transparency International.

CEU now ranks in the 101-150 spot worldwide in political science and in the 151-200 spot in economics, according to Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017. This year, institutions are ranked in 52 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. To be included in a subject ranking, universities need to have a minimum number of research publications during the period of 2011-2015. The publication threshold is different for different subjects.
