Daniel Monterescu, associate professor at CEU's Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, published "Twilight Nationalism: Politics of Existence at Life’s Edge" with Haim Hazan, professor of anthropology at Tel Aviv University, with Stanford University Press. This examination of the city of Jaffa through the collective memory and life stories of its Jewish and Palestinian residents illustrates the complexity of national identity and how existential circumstances can supercede it in importance in people's lives.

CEU Alumna Maria Baiocchi was named a 2018 Woodrow Wilson Women’s Studies Fellow. The program supports PhD candidates in the humanities and social sciences whose work addresses women’s and gendered issues in interdisciplinary and original ways who are in their final year of dissertation writing. Baiocchi is one of 10 winners this year who will receive a $5,000 award for expenses such as research-related travel, data work/collection, and supplies connected with completing their dissertations.

A few days ago I was locked out on the CEU rooftop.
It can happen to anyone, especially during the winter months. Because of the slippery ice, snow or wind, the building staff closed it off. It was -5°C and windy. I am from Russia, but still didn’t want to spend a night in these conditions. After checking all the doors and having a strange dialogue with the receptionist through intercom, I escaped.

Associate Professor Prem Kumar Rajaram of the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, as well as alumni Aleksander Tarkowski, who graduated from that department in 2007, and Marek Antos, who graduated from the Department of Legal Studies in 2013, have been named to the NewEurope100 list of changemakers in Central and Eastern Europe for their innovative contributions in society and politics.
