CEU showcased its experience in internationalization in higher education this month at the European Association for International Education (EAIE) Annual Conference. Held September 12-15 in Seville, Spain, six CEU representatives presented to many of the 6,000 delegates from 95 countries on topics ranging from international alumni relations trends, and the international student life cycle, and the challenges internationalization policies face in a polarized world.

CEU alumna Lenka Bustikova (POLS '00) and Cristina Corduneau-Huci, assistant professor at CEU's School of Public Policy and Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy, and International Relations, received the prize for 2017 Best Paper award by the American Political Science Association's Comparative Democratization section for their article, Patronage, Trust, and State Capacity: The Historical Trajectories of Clientelism.

CEU now ranks in the 101-150 spot worldwide in political science and in the 151-200 spot in economics, according to Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017. This year, institutions are ranked in 52 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. To be included in a subject ranking, universities need to have a minimum number of research publications during the period of 2011-2015. The publication threshold is different for different subjects.

Martin Kahanec, associate professor at the School of Public Policy, has been appointed by Deputy Prime Minister and Czech Council for Research, Development and Innovations Chair Pavel Belobradek as the chair of the Council's Expert Panel for Social Sciences. The mission of the Expert Panel is to verify and evaluate the output of research organizations in the Czech Republic, with the main objective of identifying the most significant research results attaining the highest quality in the respective research area.
