In October 2015, CENS celebrated its 10th anniversary. During its first decade, CENS developed as an independent research unit, dividing its resources equally between research and creating a space for critical debate, welcoming scholars, policy-makers, civil society actors and students alike.

Increasing volatility in the European Union has a strong influence on enlargement. In order to respond to recent changes across Europe, from March 2016, the Center for EU Enlargement Studies will be known as the Center for European Neighborhood Studies, while keeping its established acronym - CENS. It will retain its focus on EU enlargement, however, its change in name also brings a revision of its mission.

Senada Sali, Alumna, CEU Roma Graduate Preparation Program (RGPP), Legal Trainee at European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) interviewed Peter Molnar, researcher at CEU’s Center for European Neighborhood Studies about the March 17 conference at CEU entitled “The Damages of Anti-Gypsyism and Tools for Improved Responses.” The conference, organized by The Rafto Foundation for Human Rights, the CEU Center for EU Enlargement Studies (CENS), and the CEU Roma Access Programs (RAP) was part of the Frontiers of Democracy series at CEU.

CEU Professor Peter Balazs, director of the Center for EU Enlargement Studies (CENS) and former Hungarian foreign minister, was awarded the Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award by Tufts University in February.
"In the recognition of your integrity and valor as Foreign Minister, encouraging respect for humanities values and rule of law and fighting discrimination," the award said.
