Hungarian daily Nepszava interviewed Former Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Balazs, director of CEU’s Center for EU Enlargement Studies upon receiving the “Bene merito” honorary distinction. The Ambassador of Poland to Hungary, H.E. Roman Kowalski, in the presence of CEU President and Rector John Shattuck, awarded this distinction of Poland to Professor Balazs on December 1st at CEU.

Bosnia-Herzegovina must move beyond ethno-nationalist politics, away from corruption, and toward common solutions to poverty and unemployment in order to achieve stability and prosperity, according to those attending the conference “Bosnia and Herzegovina: Twenty Years after Dayton” at CEU November 18. CEU President and Rector John Shattuck, who played a key role in the Dayton peace negotiations, hosted the event, in cooperation with CEU’s Center for European Union Enlargement and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.

CEU Visiting Professor Miklos Haraszti authored a press release in his capacity as the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus. He called on the country to start reforming its laws and practices that have for two decades stifled its citizens' right to freedom of expression.

Hungarian daily Nepszabadsag reports about the AP article ‘Hungary's anti-migrant steps show Orban's right-wing shift’ published on October 15, and quotes Miklos Haraszti, director of research on human rights at CEU’s Center for EU Enlargement Studies. Haraszti says that although the method of the Hungarian Prime Minister for gaining support is to stoke conflict and then pose as the defender of Hungarians, this is the first time he can point to a real human enemy, depicting the migrants as invaders.
