Increasing volatility in the European Union has a strong influence on enlargement. In order to respond to recent changes across Europe, from March 2016, the Center for EU Enlargement Studies will be known as the Center for European Neighborhood Studies, while keeping its established acronym - CENS. It will retain its focus on EU enlargement, however, its change in name also brings a revision of its mission.

CEU Professor Peter Balazs, director of the Center for EU Enlargement Studies (CENS) and former Hungarian foreign minister, was awarded the Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award by Tufts University in February.
"In the recognition of your integrity and valor as Foreign Minister, encouraging respect for humanities values and rule of law and fighting discrimination," the award said.

The Center for EU Enlargement Studies at CEU hosted the “Ukrainian Crisis: Security and Humanitarian Dimension” workshop on April 8. Working with experts from the ground, students offered ideas for conflict resolution and prepared for post-conflict scenarios in Ukraine.

Strengthening European Bonds: Ukraine Towards the European Union, a panel discussion co-hosted by CEU’s Center for European Enlargement Studies and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung aimed to find ways for the EU and the V4 countries to contribute to the enhancement of a common European Ukraine strategy. The March 24 event was part of CEU’s Frontiers of Democracy series.

Fourteen CEU students and faculty had the opportunity to join representatives of five other Hungarian universities and attend an informal meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit to Budapest on Feb. 5. The event was hosted by Andrassy University Budapest.
