CEU is launching a new doctoral program in Network Science following its successful registration by the New York State Education Department.
CEU’s Center for Network Science and Cognitive Development Center were the first two recipients of Horizon 2020 research grants announced recently.
The Center for Network Science won a Collaborative Research Grant under Future and Emerging Technologies (FET ICT) for its research project entitled “CIMPLEX: Bringing CItizens, Models and Data together in Participatory, Interactive SociaL EXploratories.” The purpose of the project is to do basic research on ICT related data about diverse spreading phenomena in the society from diseases to innovations.
http://www.origo.hu/techbazis/20140623-ugy-terjedt-el-az-iwiw-mint-egy-virus.html - Hungarian news portal origo.hu reports: A recent study explores what the Hungarian Facebook (iWiW) relation network was like, how one of the most popular online services of the past decade spread in Hungary, and how it become unpopulated.
The Hungarian country daily newspaper Kisalfold reports: FuturICT.hu has organized its summer workshop with the title of "Infocommunicational Technologies and the Future Society” where those who were interested could listen to the presentations of renowned European and American scholars of the field. Laszlo Barabasi, professor at Northeastern University and at CEU talked about which elements make it possible to control a network.

Janos Kertesz, professor at CEU's Center for Network Science (CNS), was awarded the Szechenyi Prize by Hungarian President Janos Ader on March 15. The award honors those who have made an outstanding contribution to academic life.
Kertesz, who is also a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, received the Szechenyi Prize for his internationally recognized achievements in statistical physics and its interdisciplinary applications, especially in the field of network science.
Régóta foglalkoztatja a kutatókat, milyen kreatív környezet ideális az új ötletek megszületése szempontjából. A közelmúltban arra jutottak: minél inkább heterogén fejlesztőcsoportok kezdenek együtt dolgozni, üzletileg annál sikeresebb lesz a létrejövő új alkotás. Arról már nem is szólva, hogy a politika és a gazdasági élet összefonódásainak hálózatos vizsgálata is érdekes eredményekre vezetett. (2014.01.11.)
The academic adage “publish or perish” certainly keeps professors busy trying to communicate their research, but how do they measure the real impact of their work? CEU Visiting Professor of Network Science Albert-Laszlo Barabasi sought to quantify the influence of academic papers and subsequent progression of knowledge in a field by creating a predictive tool to determine just how successful an academic paper will be.
In October, Barabasi and his co-authors published their paper “Quantifying Long-Term Scientific Impact” in the journal Science.
CEU Professor Rosario Mantegna is not a detective, but he's getting to know the criminal mind, or at least criminal patterns. A scholar whose main interest is networks, Mantegna has put his mind to work, this time, to examine human behavior instead of market fluctuations.
Although criminal records are a matter of public record in some countries, to have a large, consistent database is rare. Mantegna and his co-researchers identified a such a database in Sweden. Nordic countries are well known for maintaining precise records in the interest of academic study.
Az adatok megkönnyíthetik, de akár nehezíthetik is a döntéshozatalt, és az emberek manipulálására is szolgálhatnak. (2013.10.15.)
