Young children take context into account and incorporate knowledge of past events and other people’s beliefs when making decisions, according to a new study by researchers Ildiko Kiraly and Katalin Olah of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in collaboration with researchers Gergely Csibra and Agnes Melinda Kovacs of Central European University (CEU) published recently in the Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences.

Four research laboratories working on infant cognition and development gathered at CEU to present their work at the "Little Scientists' Afternoon" on Feb. 24. Budapest seems to be a center for infant research, with four world-class laboratories, the presenters said.

CEU Professor Gergely Csibra of the Cognitive Development Center and the Department of Cognitive Science has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in the U.S. in recognition of his distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

CEU’s Cognitive Development Center (CDC) celebrated its fifth birthday at a family day at the Budapest Zoo on May 31. A total of 497 parents and children, previous volunteers in CDC’s research studies, joined in the festivities, which featured activities for children such as arts and crafts, face painting, animal show and tombola as well as scientific talks and poster presentations for parents prepared by the CDC researchers. The special event was financed by an European Research Council Grant awarded to Professor Gergely Csibra.
