The conscious development of a learning society, essential for shared prosperity, can only be achieved in a liberal democracy, according to Nobel prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, who spoke at CEU on Nov. 10 as part of CEU’s Frontiers of Democracy initiative.

CEU mourns the loss of Professor Jacek Kochanowicz, who passed away October 2. Kochanowicz was a visiting professor at CEU for 14 years, holding a parallel professorship at Warsaw University, his alma mater.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014-2015 has named CEU among the world's top 100 universities in the social sciences category for the first time in the University's history. Ranked number 91, just behind the Ivy League's Brown University, CEU is one of only 31 European universities to make the list. CEU is not eligible for placement in the overall university rankings as it does not have undergraduate programs.

Several changes and new appointments in the central administration took effect on August 1. “The new organization, which streamlines the central administration by combining several functions and reducing the number of senior positions, will enhance CEU’s capacity to achieve excellence in the pursuit of our open society mission,” said President and Rector John Shattuck.

Six hundred students from more than 70 countries received master’s and doctoral degrees from Central European University at the 23rd annual graduation ceremony June 21. Also at the event, the CEU Open Society Prize, awarded for substantial contributions to the creation of an open society, was presented to European Commissioner of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva.
