Budapest, May 26, 2016 – Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF, known as Doctors Without Borders in English) has been named the winner of the 2016 CEU Open Society Prize in recognition of the courageous humanitarian leadership the organization has shown throughout the world. The award, given annually, was first presented to Sir Karl Popper in 1994. Subsequent winners include Vaclav Havel, Arpad Goncz, Ricardo Lagos, Carla Del Ponte, Kofi Annan, Javier Solana, Kristalina Georgieva and Richard C. Holbrooke.

The Last Days of Stalin, the latest book by Joshua Rubenstein, associate at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University, demystified a very unique period of Soviet history at a book launch at CEU on May 3.
Beyond his scholarship, Joshua Rubenstein is a long-time human rights leader, CEU President and Rector John Shattuck said in his introduction. Current Russian leadership is trying to copy some of Stalin’s methods, and his views on nationality and control over borderlands are shaping Russian approach today, Shattuck added.

The rule of law is so essential to democracy that it is the guiding principle in key issues today – fighting the lawless ISIL, tackling corruption, guaranteeing human rights for asylum seekers, and securing a free and democratic Ukraine, according to U.S. Ambassador to Hungary Colleen Bell, speaking at CEU May 17. Bell’s lecture was hosted by CEU’s Center for European Neighborhood Studies, and Bell was introduced by CEU President and Rector John Shattuck.

Dr. Michael Ignatieff, Edward R. Murrow Professor of Practice of the Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, international commentator on contemporary issues of democracy, human rights, and governance, has been unanimously elected CEU’s fifth president and rector by the University’s Senate and the Board of Trustees.

Central European University (CEU) hosted 35 university presidents and administrators from 27 institutions in countries from Nigeria to Iraq, Italy to Kyrgyzstan, in Budapest April 21-23 for the annual meeting of the American Association of International Colleges and Universities (AAICU). AAICU upholds the highest standards in American higher education, such as English-language instruction, a non-profit business model, liberal arts-inspired curricula, and American regional accreditation.
