Budapest, June 26, 2018 – Having fulfilled its obligations under Hungarian law and faced with the Hungarian government’s continuing refusal to bring the lex CEU matter to a conclusion, the university’s Board of Trustees, at their June 23 meeting authorized CEU to open recruitment for Budapest for the academic year 2019-2020, according to the University’s regular recruitment schedule. They also strongly re-affirmed their commitment to the university in all circumstances.

Today at Central European University's 27th graduation ceremony, 693 students from 100 countries received master's, doctoral degrees and non-degree certificates at Budapest's Palace of Arts (MUPA). The University also awarded the Open Society Prize to celebrated Hungarian economist Janos Kornai for his pioneering economic analysis that laid bare the destructive irrationality of “closed societies” of the communist type and for his important contributions to the economic canon.

In recognition of the University's communications campaigns in response to the attack on its academic freedom, CEU has been awarded the Council of Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence Gold Award in the Crisis Communications category. CASE, founded in 1974, is a membership association serving educational institutions and the advancement professionals who work on their behalf in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas.
