Today at Central European University's 27th graduation ceremony, 693 students from 100 countries received master's, doctoral degrees and non-degree certificates at Budapest's Palace of Arts (MUPA). The University also awarded the Open Society Prize to celebrated Hungarian economist Janos Kornai for his pioneering economic analysis that laid bare the destructive irrationality of “closed societies” of the communist type and for his important contributions to the economic canon.

In recognition of the University's communications campaigns in response to the attack on its academic freedom, CEU has been awarded the Council of Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence Gold Award in the Crisis Communications category. CASE, founded in 1974, is a membership association serving educational institutions and the advancement professionals who work on their behalf in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas.

“It is hard to think of a time when public engagement with migration policy globally has been as evident or as polarized as it is now,” said Harvard Professor Jaqueline Bhabha, as she opened her Rethinking Open Society lecture “Can We Solve the Refugee and Migration Crisis?” at CEU. She believes that, despite the sharp rise in nativism, “moves are afoot that can provide a pathway to a rational, just and inclusive migration policy for all in open and democratic societies.”

Budapest/Vienna March 12, 2018 -- Central European University (CEU) and the City of Vienna announce that they are in negotiations about a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that would enable CEU to open a satellite campus site in Vienna, complementing its home campus in Budapest and its American site at Bard College in New York State. As the largest German-speaking university city close to CEU’s home base in Budapest, Vienna offers ideal conditions for a new site. On the basis of the MoU, the Otto Wagner area will be examined as a possible location.

In advance of Germany’s Social Democratic party (SPD) agreeing to form another “grand coalition” government with the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Director of the German Council on Foreign Relations Daniela Schwarzer spoke at CEU on “Germany and the Fate of Open Society in Europe.” Her lecture was part of CEU's ongoing series Rethinking Open Society.

Literary historian and translator Endre Bojtar, one of many distinguished intellectuals who took part in the founding of Central European University, passed away Feb. 11. An early advocate along with Peter Hanak of the idea of a common Central European heritage, Bojtar participated in discussions in Dubrovnik about founding an educational institution that would strengthen the cohesion of the region. Those discussions resulted in the establishment of CEU in 1991.
