“The way I expect universities to behave is to constantly look for new ways of understanding reality,” CEU Founder and Honorary Chairman George Soros said at the launch of the Hungarian translation of his book “The Soros Lectures: George Soros at Central European University” on Nov. 27. “I hope that CEU is doing that already and will do it even more... I think CEU is now mature enough that it can be at the cutting edge.”

It’s natural that liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans, are finding it difficult to make compromises to solve the current budget crisis in the U.S., according to cognitive linguist George Lakoff, professor at the University of California, Berkeley who spoke Oct. 15 at CEU. It’s because the two groups view the world based on vastly different metaphors that are wired into our cognitive functioning, he said.

In an op-ed piece in USA Today Sept. 12, CEU President and Rector John Shattuck recommends comparing the atrocities in Syria to Bosnia, where diplomatic efforts were backed by force, bringing warring parties to the negotiating table.
Shattuck is a former U.S. State Department assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor. In that role, he was a member of the U.S. negotiating team at the 1995 Dayton Peace Conference.
