The CEU community and special guests gathered in the University's new auditorium on October 21 to inaugurate the University's fifth President and Rector Michael Ignatieff. Chairman of the Board of Trustees Leon Botstein conducted the investiture during a ceremony complemented by Hungarian music and poetry. The ceremony also celebrated the two new state-of-the-art campus buildings. Ignatieff is a Canadian professor, award-winning writer, and former politician educated at the University of Toronto and Harvard University.

Central European University and Siemens Zrt. signed a memorandum of understanding October 4 that formalizes a longstanding relationship with a view to enhancing student learning through access to Siemens expertise and technology, especially in environmentally friendly technology. Siemens state-of-the-art technology is an important part of CEU's two new buildings, contributing to energy efficiency and cost savings.

Professor Michael Ignatieff has been appointed Rector of Kozep-europai Egyetem, CEU's Hungarian entity. Ignatieff received his credentials in Sandor Palace from the President of Hungary, Janos Ader. The appointment is from September 1, 2016 to August 31, 2021.

Dr. Michael Ignatieff, Edward R. Murrow Professor of Practice of the Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, international commentator on contemporary issues of democracy, human rights, and governance, has been unanimously elected CEU’s fifth president and rector by the University’s Senate and the Board of Trustees.

CEU’s Opening Ceremony, held September 21, celebrated the start of the 2015-2016 academic year and also launched the University’s 25th Anniversary. The incoming class, more than 600 students from a record 107 countries, received a special welcome from President and Rector John Shattuck.

This November will mark 20 years since the Dayton Peace Agreement ended the war in Bosnia. International intervention happened too late, according to CEU President and Rector John Shattuck and his former colleague John Kornblum, who participated in the Dayton negotiations and discussed the process in Budapest on July 6 at the opening of the 2015 session of the Jozsef Antall Summer School.
