CEU formally began its new Academic Year today, welcoming students, faculty, staff and distinguished guests with an Opening Ceremony held in the spirit of free inquiry, diversity, and open society that are the hallmarks of CEU.
CEU leadership welcomed close to 700 new students from more than 80 countries to the community, which now includes 1,700 students and hundreds of staff and faculty, as well as 16,000 alumni worldwide.

CEU mourns the death of Kofi Annan, peace-maker, statesman, Ghanaian patriot and friend of this university who, without ever being asked, sprang to our defense last year with a ringing defense of our right to remain here in Budapest, furthering our mission. We will continue to teach the values he lived by: passionate engagement in international affairs, solidarity for and compassion towards those who suffer injustice and cruelty and a deep commitment to the resolution of conflict through dialogue and compromise.

CEU President and Rector Michael Ignatieff receives an honorary degree by the University of Edinburgh at a ceremony July 3, 2018.
"The Senatus Academicus of this University has resolved to invite you to be admitted to the honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Social Science for your championship of liberal values as an academic, writer, and journalist," wrote Professor Sir Timothy O'Shea, principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, in a letter informing Ignatieff of the honor.

Budapest, June 26, 2018 – Having fulfilled its obligations under Hungarian law and faced with the Hungarian government’s continuing refusal to bring the lex CEU matter to a conclusion, the university’s Board of Trustees, at their June 23 meeting authorized CEU to open recruitment for Budapest for the academic year 2019-2020, according to the University’s regular recruitment schedule. They also strongly re-affirmed their commitment to the university in all circumstances.

Today at Central European University's 27th graduation ceremony, 693 students from 100 countries received master's, doctoral degrees and non-degree certificates at Budapest's Palace of Arts (MUPA). The University also awarded the Open Society Prize to celebrated Hungarian economist Janos Kornai for his pioneering economic analysis that laid bare the destructive irrationality of “closed societies” of the communist type and for his important contributions to the economic canon.

It is vital for the future of academic freedom in Hungary that the Academy conserve its right to govern itself and to allocate resources for research on scientific criteria alone.

In recognition of the University's communications campaigns in response to the attack on its academic freedom, CEU has been awarded the Council of Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence Gold Award in the Crisis Communications category. CASE, founded in 1974, is a membership association serving educational institutions and the advancement professionals who work on their behalf in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas.

Budapest, June 14 2018 –Central European University is awarding its highest honor, the Open Society Prize, to the distinguished Hungarian economist Janos Kornai in recognition of his work in inspiring economic transition in former communist societies. Created in 1994, the award has been given to Karl Popper, Vaclav Havel, Arpad Goncz, Tom Lantos, Bronislaw Geremek, Ricardo Lagos, Carla Del Ponte, Kofi Annan, Richard C. Holbrooke, Joachim Gauck and Kristalina Georgieva, among others. The Prize will be presented to Kornai at CEU's commencement ceremony in Budapest on June 22.
