While the Bologna process and the establishment of the European Higher Education Area created conditions for university autonomy, steps to codify and protect academic freedom have been neglected, panelists said in a university-wide seminar. The seminar, entitled "University Autonomy and Academic Freedom in Europe: Diverging Paths," is part of a series sponsored by CEU’s Intellectual Themes Initiative.

INTELLECTUAL THEMES INITIATIVE Call for Proposals Academic Year 2018/19 CEU academic staff members are invited to submit project proposals for new teaching, research, or civic engagement activities under the Intellectual Themes Initiative (ITI). At the suggestion of the Strategic Development Committee, ITI also serves as a privileged vehicle for developing and offering University-wide Courses (UWC). Starting with this call, we are introducing a separate application form for University-wide Courses.

The CEU Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes CEU faculty members for promoting high standards of teaching, linked with the mission and institutional ambitions of CEU. The Award not only underscores CEU's long-standing commitment to excellence in teaching, but also provides an opportunity for students and alumni to acknowledge teaching at CEU that has had a special impact on their academic work and lives. The Award will be presented at the CEU Opening Ceremony in September 2018.

CEU Provost Liviu Matei delivered the keynote address, entitled "Universities in Danger," at the annual Die Zeit Conference on University & Education, which provides a platform for high-level representatives of higher education institutions and research organizations, the business sector and the media, as well as policymakers from Germany to exchange ideas and discuss topics of public relevance in higher education and science policy. The theme of this year’s edition, held at the Allianz Forum in Berlin on November 16, 2017, was “How Political is Science”?

Professor Petra Aczel, Head of the Institute of Behavioural Sciences and Communication Theory at Corvinus University, and Maurizio Pirro, Associate Professor of German Literature of the University of Bari Aldo Moro will receive the sixth annual CEU European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The award, initiated by CEU Provost and Pro-Rector Liviu Matei and overseen by the University’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), aims to promote excellence in teaching across the European Higher Education Area.
